| ESPRIT for Hollow Axis Rotary Wire EDM | ||
Rotary EDM technology has taken a completely new turn with the development of the hollow axis by ITS-Technologies. In the ITS-MA2-i-115, the part is mounted and rotated inside the opening of a hollow shaft. The advantage is that you can cut on all sides of a part without anything to obstruct the wire guides.
ESPRIT has supported this type of 5-axis wire EDM technology since the release of Turn-While-Burn technology in ESPRIT 2010.

| Facing Fierce Competition with Multi-tasking Machining | ||
Multi-tasking is one technology that has been around for a while, but has only recently become the hot topic as more shops discover its uses. In fact, many companies that previously never thought about getting a multi-tasking machine have done so, or are thinking about doing so, for the gains in productivity they offer.

| EDM Strategies for Odd Pockets | ||
The wire EDM market thrives on complex shapes that are difficult, if not impossible, to cut by any other means.However, that challenge can become a real chore when geometry is too complex to remove easily in one piece. One option is to remove sections of material bit by bit with cumbersome geometric manipulations and multiple machining operations. A better choice is to let a computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) system perform an intelligent calculation of the geometry and then generate the simplest, most intuitive wire path possible to effortlessly remove a complex shape.

| In a Pinch: Using Two Tools to Balance Cutting Forces | ||
Machine shops must constantly balance the need for quality with the need to reduce cycle times. One solution to this challenge is a machine equipped with two opposing turrets. These machines allow pinch (or balanced) machining, where two tools cut simultaneously on either side of the workpiece. When two tools cut the same profile simultaneously, with one tool above the axis of rotation and the other below, shops can crank up feedrates and maximize throughput.ESPRIT offers a Balanced Roughing function for pinch turning. Don’t let the name fool you because the same cycle can be used for balanced finishing as well. In addition to a dedicated turning cycle, ESPRIT users can also perform pinch milling and other types of pinch turning to maximize productivity. For multi-turret machines, pinch machining is a capability that often gets overlooked and that’s a shame. Balanced machining could be the key to a better balance sheet for your business.

| “Using Visual Basic in Esprit … It’s Not Just for the Gurus! Part II” | ||
In Part I of this article, I made an effort to entice those who are aware of ESPRIT’s ability to implement Visual Basic into the programming environment, but who may think they are not capable of doing so, to give the process a try. I understand this can’t-do mentality because I once entertained it myself. As a programmer, I understand the daily life spent chipping away at a list of ever-growing demands that seem to never diminish.
